Preliminary Notification: Subsequently, a preliminary notification was issued by the government to declare an area of 50 square kilometers within these Reserve Forests as Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary. This preliminary notification was issued on September 4, 2001, as per government reference number B.12012/17/2001-FST.


Final Notification: The final notification to establish Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary was issued by the government on April 23, 2002. This notification officially declared an area of 50 square kilometers as the sanctuary, and it was issued under government reference number B.12012/17/2001-FST.


International and National Significance: The sanctuary is significant at the international and national levels because it provides protection to six rare and endangered species of wildlife (Tiger, Clouded Leopard Threatened, Leopard Cat, Hoolock Gibbon, Leaf Monkey and Serow) listed in the Red Data Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Appendices of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (WPA).

The sanctuary is home to a variety of shrub species, including Bridelia monoica (Phaktel), Tabernaemontana divarcaita (Keltebengbeh), Gnetum gnemon (Pelh), Maesa indica (Arngeng), and Leeca indica (Kawlkar), among others.


(3) Herbs:

Herbaceous vegetation in the sanctuary includes species like Elatostema sessile (Suanglung-an), Solanum nigrum (Anhling), Microlepia strigosa (Katchat), Gleichenia linearis (Arthladawn), Solanum viarum (Athlohling), and more.


(4) Rare and Endangered Species:

The sanctuary is home to species of conservation importance. These include Quercus species (oaks), Betula species (birches), wild orchids, and the rare bamboo species Chimnobambusa collasa. Proper conservation efforts are necessary to protect these rare and endangered plants.
